DAKAR - The Challenge of the Desert

This book is about the Dakar Rally and is dedicated to the memory of John Deacon with an introduction by Bill, his father. It is published with the agreement of Hubert Auriol, the only competitor to win the Dakar Rally on two and four wheels. Now retired from competition he is the Chief Executive of ASO the organisers of the Dakar Rally, the Tour de France cycle race and the Le Torquet beach race. A foreword written by Ari Vatanen, a four times winner of the Dakar and a former World and British Rally champion compietes the book's pedigree. The purpose of the book, which has a very high photographic content, is to explain some of the intricacies of an event that is sometimes seen as complicated. This was the ambition of John Deacon, the BMW works rider, who you may recall was Britain's most successful desert racer. John's idea, which the book follows, was to encourage more British competitors, and indeed more English speaking competitors to consider taking part in this exciting event. All motorcycle, car and truck enthusiasts, typically those that are interested in any motor sport, including those that follow the Dakar on television and in magazines will find that this book takes them closer to the action. Many of the photographs illustrate the atmosphere in the North African villages and give an insight into the 'mystique' of this famous event. The content of the book centres on the 2003 twenty-fifth event, and covers all aspects of competing, machine types and classes. Sections cover documentation; personalities and the winners in each class over the 'first' twenty-five years are listed. Regarding ourselves, the authors, we have a competitive motor and motorcycle background that stretches back for decades, further than we are usually prepared to admit. As regular contributors to magazines in Britain, and overseas and with our motor and motorcycle industry background we feel well qualified for the task of writing this important contribution to any bookshelf.
